Have you ever noticed a security guard watching you?
You might be walking at the local shopping centre, or just looking for car parts in the auto shop and a quick sidewys glance may reveal the watchful stare of a security guard, tailing your every move.
Well, from what I have noticed over the last few years, we are experiencing the rise of the security guard! Is it because as a society we are becoming more devious, with obvious criminal thoughts on our mind, is it a simple reminder that in this new age of technology we are being watched everywhere we go, in everything we do?
I think it’s a little of both. These days, if you take a stroll down to your local shopping precinct you can see that a variety of stores have their goods actually outside there physical location. This means that anyone wand everyone could theoretically just grab an item and hot step-it. However, with the thought of a security guard on many people’s minds, they are most likely less inclined to to take the risk.
I have also noticed that many security guards are simply being used as points of reference and some even seem to be their as a watchful minder, helping people who are lost, providing information when needs be. So this indicates that some businesses feel that having a security guard present not only will lessen their chances of being robbed, but also provides a feeling a comfort for their clientele.
I have also noticed a huge prevelence of securit guards in large office locations and in industrial estates. These guards are simply called “static guards” because they remain in the one location and periodically walk the fences or check on all the entry points of the buildings. So what is the point of these guards? Are they there simply as a deterrent, or is there another reason for their presence?
In my opinion, both are valid reasons for their presence. I think the primary reason we see so many security guards on a day to day basis is that they act as a visual deterrent and perhaps contribute to a lower incidents of theft and vandalism. I know that if I had some industrial property or retail stock worth many hundreds of thousands of dollars (or even more) I too would want to minimise the chances of my investment possibly being harmed.
But, I feel there is one other reason that is lurking in the background. In these times of hardened insurance companies and frivolous claims I believe that if a business owner employs the use of a security guard their insurance premiums will be far lower than if they go without. We all know that insurance premiums are on a yearly rise and one way that business owbers may be able to lower this cost is through employing the use of a security guard.
So the next time you look over your shoulder and catch the glare of a watchful eye, remember, they are only their protecting what another person has worked hard to acquire. Don’t begrudge them this, and perhaps even offer a wave or hello as you go on your daily toils.
